Ken Graham on Earth Hour

Kennedy Graham MP switches off for Earth Hour

With less than a week to go, Kennedy Graham MP has publicly demonstrated his commitment to WWF’s Earth Hour, the global ‘lights out’ event for action on climate change.

The MP is calling on residents in Ilam to switch off lights and unnecessary appliances for Earth Hour, which takes place on Saturday 27 March at 8.30pm local time globally.

To encourage others to take part, Kennedy Graham was photographed in front of a giant light switch at Parliament Buildings. He said: “I support Earth Hour because it inspires people to take action on climate change. Turning off lights for one hour is a symbolic act demonstrating how our small individual actions can add up to make a big difference.”

Iconic New Zealand landmarks including Wellington’s Parliament Buildings and the Beehive and Auckland’s Sky Tower will be plunged into darkness for Earth Hour this Saturday night. Individuals and businesses around New Zealand will also be switching off in their homes, shops or business premises to show their support for the international initiative.

Chris Howe, WWF-New Zealand’s Executive Director, welcomed the support of MPs. He said: “Earth Hour is the largest mass participation environmental event on the planet. It’s a powerful, inclusive movement that unites millions of citizens from across New Zealand and the world who want to see action on climate change. Earth Hour goes beyond politics or cultural boundaries – it is about our shared planet and protecting it for future generations.

“We encourage all Kiwis to join in by switching off at 8.30pm this Saturday.”

About Earth Hour
Earth Hour is a global campaign organised by WWF to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to take the steps needed to cut their emissions on an ongoing basis. It is about simple changes that will collectively make a difference – from businesses turning off their lights when their offices are empty, to households turning off appliances rather than leaving them on standby. Earth Hour is a message of hope and action.
