Saturday I did volunteer work in Beckenham, shovelling liquefacted soil.
Sunday, we got a group of about 20 Greens (including Metiria) to volunteer through the Student Army.
Metiria and Worik had spent Saturday enticing Dunedin firms into donating wheelbarrows etc.
Then brought them, plus utensils plus food, up to the sister city in a rollicking SUV.
Because we were a large group, we deployed not on the buses but as a separate group with our own transport.
We spent the morning in Woolston (off Ferry Road), on two missions: clearing up the liquefaction and door-knocking for humanitarian support.
Both were appreciated.
We spent the afternoon doing the same at a site about a kilometre away.
Thanks to Metiria and Worik, Marilyn, Andrew, Dave, Peter, Ashley, Dave (USA), Tim T & Nina, Tim W, Janet, Felix, Hannah, Valerie, Joseph, Mojo, and Jason plus maybe some others elsewhere (Nikki plus…..)
Tomorrow we can do the same. I met Sam Johnson, the student leader, and he wanted me to convey their heartfelt thanks to the Greens for turning out in such numbers, including with 2 MPs.
I know that the weekend is different from the week, but if people are able to volunteer for Monday, please let me know. It is better we do it in a group.
Telephone me on 351 4940 or 021 242 3989.
Later in the week, I have to travel to Auckland for the Committee hearings on the Alcohol Reform Bill (Wednesday through Saturday).
Metiria has agreed to come back up for the Aoraki Exec meeting on Thursday night.
And Keith Locke is likely to be in Chch for it as well -- both volunteering and for the Aoraki Exec.
I think all members should feel encouraged to turn up if they wish to do so -- these are special times.
David Moorhouse is offering his house as venue. He will send an email out shortly.
